Assignment 1: A landscape

Assignment Task

For this assignment pick a fresh landscape, natural or urban, figurative or abstract.
Using your favourite print medium execute a set of three colour prints, each using a minimum of three colours.
Each print must be different but connected in some way. For instance it might be the same scene at different times of the day, in different weather conditions or observed from three different viewpoints.

Overall assessment

Working process

For this assignment, I decided to work in the Lion Yard shopping centre to do another set of urban abstracts.

First sketches and photos

I had earlier taken photographs, and was fascinated by the shapes made by the sunlight.

I decided to use screenprint, taking opportunity of a course in photoscreen printing at Curwen Gallery in Cambridge.

I started by using photographs, as a different way of working from the previous projects. I liked the way they flattened perspective and could be manipulated digitally to increase or reduce contrast, giveing new ideas about patterns and light. I concerted the orginal images into black and white. I then experimented with different crops to increase the balance of shapes. As the earlier images had been square and they were supposed to form a series, I looked at different square cropped compositions.

I did some abstract 3 tone mockups in Procreate, altering the shapes where necessary as I went along.

As I did the photoscreen designs I further simplified the underlying design, and experimented with mark making in the drawn overlay. I was able to put the 6 squares onto one photoplate.

Choice of colours….

As I started to print the drawn layers over the flat layers I discovered I had left far too much white. Some prints  did not have such good print quality because the ink was going off, or the plate needed to be cleaned. On these I started to experiment with turning the design. The most successful prints were those where I had overlaid three colours onto the base paper colour.
