5: Mushrooms

2018. Collagraph 25 x 25 cm. From Assignment 3: Still Life.Concept: This print is one of a series of ‘not so still life imaginings’ inspired by a set of Japanese mushrooms. The different shapes and textures of the mushrooms acquire characters and suggest narratives. This particular print was chosen from the series of five because the colour and texture contrasts and meanings are clearest: the sexual entanglement/confrontation of the two large ‘parent’ mushrooms at the back (red engorged male and cold blue female), oblivious and separate from the bullying by the ‘squawking swan’ initimidating the innocent white smaller mushrooms at the front.

Technical details: Collagraph of different papers and card printed with Hawthorne oil-based inks on thin Japanese Hosho Paper.
